Chapter 8

The rebels arrived a few hours past dawn, and seeing them in the distance gave me pause. I couldn’t help it, really. And yet, it surprised me how little nervous I was. Maybe it would change later.

I was fucking nervous, though a part of me had feared I would panic at the sight of them, and while my hands and legs shook a little at the beginning, eventually, I got over it. It might have helped that it would still take them hours to close the distance toward us.

I asked Emily about it.

“They need to prepare their own defenses.” The catgirl explained. “Without a steady surface like our walls, they’re limited in what they can do in terms of runic magic. Arrays like the ones we put on the walls are too complex to move around. They need to get by with simpler magics.”

Still, slowly, very slowly, they closed the distance towards us, though they stopped about three-quarter miles away from us, well out of range from most magic.

After we spent some time on the walls, Amaranth joined Emily and me though the catgirl’s glance indicated perfectly well she would have preferred it if the dragon queen wasn’t in sight of their enemies. The blonde ignored the glance.

Her eyes narrowed as she studied her enemies. “They’re going to concentrate the attack on the northern wall.”

I blinked at her, then looked toward the enemy in the distance, and realized she was right. If they had meant to attack the main gate, they should already be stretching their soldiers toward that area. It didn’t seem they would do that from the start. I almost cursed.

Our plan hinged on them trying to attack from the front as well, that was where the al-fire would be poured into the pipes, and we would hopefully blow them up. If they focused their entire force on the northern wall…

Emily looked at our surroundings, then leaned in to whisper close to Amaranth’s ear. “Surely, they don’t know about our trap?”

“I doubt it. They must feel confident they’ll be able to break through here. We’ll need to prove them wrong first.” The dragon queen said confidently, and I could only hope she was right.

“Our defenses are strong,” Emily said, nodding as she turned to look at the rebels. “And if they only attack in this direction, we can focus most of our force in this area.”

Amaranth nodded, then looked at the central tower and tilted her head to the side. “I wonder if we can build some small arrays around some of the windows and put a few more mages there. They won’t be able to provide any accurate firepower, but to suppress the enemies…”

“It could work. I’ll send Alba with you.”

The blonde blinked at the other female. “I do know how to trace runic arrays, you know?”

“Yes, you do. With Alba there, you’ll do it faster and without tiring yourself as much.”

No matter how much Amaranth wanted to complain about that, she only sighed and nodded, then left with the white-haired catgirl after Emily called for her.
